Mungkin sebagian dari kamu udah tau tentang Jason Mraz, ato mungkin enggak. It’s ok, tau ato enggak, toh ga terlalu ngepek…. hehe…. hanya sekedar informasi sih gue nurunin tulisan tentang Mraz. Lagian, kebetulan, beberapa bulan terakhir ini gue emang lagi suka bangets sama lagunya Mraz, yeah, apalagi kalo bukan I’m Yours.

Well, menurut gue, tahun 2008 kemaren adalah tahun fenomenal bagi Mraz, secara I’m Yours berhasil jadi hit dunia.

Jason Thomas Mraz atau lebih familiar dengan Jason Mraz lahir pada 23 Juni 1977. Ia tumbuh dan besar di Mechanicsville, Virginia, United States. Dulu, kakek Mraz hijrah ke amrik dari Chechoslovakia. Mraz sempet sekolah di American Musical and Dramatic Academy di New York City walo cuma sebentar sebelum akhirnya pindah ke San Diego.

Mraz adalah seorang penyanyi dan pencipta lagu yang piawai. Ia menguasai beberapa alat musik seperti gitar, mandolin, dan ukulele (sumpe lo? …hehe). Genre musik yang diusungnya pada mulanya rock, pop-rock, alternative, jazz dan belakangan adalah blue eyed soul.

Blue eyed soul atau dikenal sebagai white soul adalah musik yang berirama R & B yang biasa dinyanyiin para penyanyi kulit putih. Musik jenis ini sebenernya udah mulai di kenal di Amrik pada dasawarsa 1960-an, tapi British Music Press mempopulerkannya pada era 1970-an. Blue Eyed Soul dipengaruhi oleh Soul Music seperti Urban Music dan Hip Hip Music.

Mraz memulai karir bermusiknya pada 2002 saat ia merilis album perdananya yang punya titel : Waiting For My Rocket To Come (rilis Oktober 2002). Album itu diproduseri oleh John Alagia (seorang produser asal Kentucky yang pernah kerja bareng John Mayer), dan bekerjasama dengan label elektra (warner music group). Sayangnya album pertama Mraz kurang terdengar gaungnya.

Karir profesional bermusik Mraz dimulai dengan ikutnya Mraz dalam konsernya Alanis Morisette pada Juli 2005. Mraz saat itu dapet tugas ngebuka konsernya Alanis. Pada bulan yang sama ia juga ngerilis album keduanya yang dimodali major-label : Atlantic Records. Album Mraz yang kedua bertajuk Mr. A – Z. Tanpa diduga, album Mraz itu berhasil masuk Billboard 200 album chart dengan menduduki posisi 5. Single pertamanya adalah The Remedy (I won’t Worry), ditulis oleh team music production : the matrix. Di sela2 promo album, Mraz sempet juga ngebuka konser keliling dunia-nya Rolling Stone.

Pada Desember 2005, Mr. A – Z berhasil memperoleh nominasi Grammy Award untuk kategori Best Engineered Album, non-classical.

Album berikutnya dari Mraz adalah : We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, rilis pada Mei 2008. Single pertama dari album ini adalah I’m Yours.

I’m Yours ternyata berhasil menduduki peringkat pertama di Charts AAA Radio di Amrik sono. Pada September 2008, lagu tersebut masuk ke jajaran Top 10 hit di Billboard 100 dan berhasil nembus peringkat 6.

Pada Oktober 2008, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things berhasil memperoleh golden platinum dari RIAA karna terjual sampe 500 ribu copy di US aje. I’m Yours juga dinominasiin sebagai song of the year and best male pop vocal performance at 2009 oleh 51st Grammy Award (yang sayangnya ga dapet, hiks). Sementara albumnya dapet nominasi best engineered album non classical in 2009. O, ya, konon kabarnya, dari hasil nyanyinya selama ini, Mraz udah berhasil beli pesawat jet pribadi, fiuh, keren gila. (berbagai sumber).
